Beyond Malta — Day Trips Worth Taking

Malta is surrounded by sister islands, each with a distinct personality. Even within Malta, the contrast between areas is remarkable for such a small island.

Top Pick Full day
Gozo — Malta's Rural Sister Island
Quieter, greener and slower than Malta — Gozo feels like stepping back in time. Victoria (Rabat) citadel, the dramatic Dwejra coastline, Ramla l-Ħamra (the red sand beach), world-class diving, and some of Malta's best restaurants.
25 min ferry from Ċirkewwa Rent a car on Gozo
Historic Half day
Mdina & Rabat — The Silent City
Just 30 minutes from Valletta. Mdina's car-free medieval streets are best explored in the early morning or evening when tour groups have gone. Combine with Rabat next door — the catacombs beneath the town are genuinely fascinating.
Bus or taxi Magical at night Must-see
Local Life Half day
Marsaxlokk — Fishing Village
Malta's most picturesque fishing village, famous for its colourful luzzu boats painted with the Eye of Osiris. Come on a Sunday for the fish market. Stay for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants serving the freshest seafood on the island.

History Half day
Three Cities — Birgu, Senglea, Bormla
Across the Grand Harbour from Valletta by water taxi — Birgu is the oldest fortified city in Malta, pre-dating the Knights. The Inquisitor's Palace, Fort St Angelo, and tiny back streets feel completely different to Valletta.

Scenic Half day
Dingli Cliffs — Malta's Highest Point

Countryside Half day
Malta Countryside & Farmhouses
Escape the busy harbour towns and explore Malta's rural interior — terraced fields, rubble walls, old chapels, and wind farms. The area around Mgarr, Mtarfa and the Victoria Lines ridge offers great walking with panoramic views.

Eat & Drink Like a Maltese Local

Maltese cuisine is a delicious crossroads — Arab influences, Italian flavours, British staples and a fiercely local identity. Rabbit is the national dish. The wine is excellent and underrated.

🐇
Fenek (Rabbit Stew)
Malta's national dish — slow-braised rabbit in red wine, garlic, herbs and tomatoes. Deeply satisfying and uniquely Maltese. Look for it on menus across the island, especially in traditional village restaurants (each family has their recipe).
Must-try dish
🥟
Pastizzi
Flaky, diamond-shaped pastry parcels filled with either ricotta or mushy peas. Eaten for breakfast, as a snack, or late at night after the bars close. The best are from back-street pastizzeriji — cost about 40c each. Addictive.
The Maltese street food
🍞
Ħobż biż-Żejt
Maltese bread rubbed with tomato paste (kunserva), drizzled with local olive oil, and topped with tuna, capers, olives, onion and fresh tomatoes. Simple, perfect, and found in every bakery. The Maltese version of bruschetta.
Local picnic staple
🍷
Maltese Wine
Malta's wine industry is small but growing fast in quality. Look for Gellewża (indigenous red grape) and Girgentina (crisp white) — both unique to Malta. Meridiana and Marsovin are the main producers. Pair with local cheese and ftira.
Indigenous varieties
🦐
Fresh Seafood
Being an island, Malta does seafood exceptionally well. Swordfish, lampuki (dolphinfish — a Maltese autumn favourite), sea bream, and aljotta (Maltese fish soup with garlic and marjoram). Best eaten at Marsaxlokk waterfront or Valletta's seafront.
Best at Marsaxlokk
Coffee Culture
Malta runs on coffee — strong espresso in tiny cups, served in bars from 6am. The Maltese also love their kafe fil-latte (milky coffee). Explore Valletta's café scene — Is-Suq tal-Belt (the food market) is the best spot for a morning coffee and browse.
Café scene is growing
🍻
Where to Eat in Valletta & Sliema
Valletta: Noni Restaurant (modern Maltese), Rubino (traditional), Is-Suq tal-Belt food market, Café Jubilee.
Sliema: The Gut, Wild Thyme, a wide range along The Strand waterfront.
St Julian's / Paceville: Malta's dining and nightlife hub — international restaurants, beach clubs, cocktail bars.

Malta After Sunset

Malta's nightlife punches far above its size — Paceville is one of the Mediterranean's liveliest club scenes, but there's also a growing craft bar and rooftop cocktail culture well worth exploring.

Nightlife Night
Paceville — Malta's Party Hub
St Julian's Paceville area is Malta's main nightlife district — dozens of clubs, bars and restaurants in a tight grid of streets. Busiest Thursday–Saturday. A young, international crowd. Main clubs include Havana, Club Escape and Sky Club.
From midnight Young crowd
Cocktails Evening
Valletta Rooftop Bars
Valletta's rooftop bar scene has blossomed in recent years. Tico Tico, Bridge Bar and the rooftop at ION Harbour Hotel have exceptional Grand Harbour sunset views. Pre-book a table in summer — these spots fill up fast.

Special Evening
Festa Fireworks — A Malta Summer Night
If you're in Malta between May and September, try to catch a village festa. The fireworks are unlike anything in Northern Europe — Maltese pyrotechnics are a genuine art form, with fireworks factories competing for supremacy. Check local schedules.

Malta by Season

Malta is a year-round destination, but each season offers a very different experience. Here's what to expect.

🌸
Spring
March — May
Wild flowers everywhere, perfect temperatures (18–23°C), fewer tourists, best hiking conditions, Easter festas. Sea still cool but refreshing.
☀️
Summer
June — August
Peak season — hot (30–35°C), busy beaches, Blue Lagoon at maximum capacity, festas and fireworks most weekends. Book apartments and restaurants well in advance.
🍂
Autumn
Sep — November
The sweet spot — warm sea (still 25°C in October), quieter, better prices, lampuki fish season, excellent diving visibility. September is arguably Malta's finest month.
🌧️
Winter
Dec — February
Mild (14–18°C), occasional rain, very quiet, lowest prices, great for history and culture. No beach weather but Valletta and Mdina are magical. Christmas lights are lovely.

Practical Travel Tips

Everything you need to know before you arrive — transport, currency, language, and how to get around Malta like a local.

Getting Around
Tallinja bus card (€21 for 7 days, unlimited travel) is the best value. Uber and eCabs are reliable for taxis. Bolt works too. Renting a car is useful for beaches and temples but parking in Valletta is nearly impossible — take the bus.
Currency & Costs
Euro (€). Budget €40–60/day for food + transport + activities without accommodation. Pastizzi cost 40c. A full restaurant meal is €12–25. A bus anywhere in Malta costs €2 (or free with Tallinja card). Taxis are metered and fair.
Language
Maltese and English are both official languages — almost everyone speaks excellent English. Maltese is a fascinating Semitic language with Arabic roots, Italian vocabulary and English loanwords. You'll hear it everywhere.
SIM Cards & WiFi
All our apartments include free high-speed WiFi. For a local SIM: Melita, GO and Epic all sell tourist SIMs at the airport. EU roaming rules mean most European visitors pay nothing extra on their home plan. Data is cheap and widely available.
Swimming & Beach Safety
Most of Malta's best swimming is off limestone rocks, not sand — water shoes help. Sea urchins hide in crevices, so avoid putting hands or feet in rock pools. Jellyfish appear August–September; check locally before diving in. Never swim at unsupervised rocky bays in rough conditions — the swell comes from nowhere.
Weather & Packing
Summers are hot and dry (30–35°C) — pack light, sunscreen SPF50+, and a hat. Spring and autumn are perfect for sightseeing. Winters are mild but bring a light jacket and a layer for evenings. Sun glasses are essential year-round.
Church & Dress Code
Malta is deeply Catholic — dress respectfully when visiting churches (shoulders and knees covered). Shorts and sleeveless tops are fine for streets and cafés but churches require covered shoulders at minimum. Scarves available at entrances.
Safety
Malta is one of Europe's safest countries — very low crime, even in busy tourist areas at night. The main risks are typical tourist ones: pickpocketing in crowds, sunburn, and overindulging on pastizzi. Emergency: 112 (EU standard).
